Coffee Company Owner Shares Caffeinated Vision

When Old Town La Quinta's developer Wells Marvin and coffeehouse entrepreneur Merv Tyer met, it was a serendipitous collision of visions, according to Tyer.
And the result of that meeting four years ago was the establishment of Old Town Coffee Company in La Quinta.
"My vision was to have a community café where people could meet in a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere," Tyer said. "I saw the void in an industry (coffee) that is growing. I love coffee and sharing my passion."
Tyer, who ran two successful coffeehouses in Palm Springs for several years, fell in love with the cove in La Quinta when he and his wife of 15 years, Anne, drove around the area.
The Canadian-born Tyer has been in the desert for 18 years, working some of it in the construction field as well. But nothing gives him the same satisfaction as getting to know his coffee customers, local artists and writers, as well as giving back to the community with charity projects.
"My biggest, most heartwarming experience was our monthlong fundraiser for The Mourning Star Center," Tyer said. "We got together with Artisan Studio, and the kids painted mugs, which we sold. We raised close to $5,000."
QUESTION: How did you choose this occupation?
ANSWER: Coffee is a passion for me, but it's the people. When I'm behind the espresso machine, I'm in my element. I love to talk with my customers and make them smile. They all know I'm crazy.
What makes your business unique in the valley?
It's because of our regulars. We know their drinks, and we know them by first name. In fact, their coffee is ready for them when they open the door. I have a fantastic staff, and we are very dog-friendly.
What would you be doing if you had another career?
I love creating. I was my own general contractor in the homes we've lived in. I am ready to move on to the next thing - roasting my own coffee.
It has to be off-site for space (reasons). But this creativity keeps me doing more and more.
How do you enjoy your time away from work?
What time? In the summer, we do go to Vancouver to visit friends and family. We also take weekends off to go to San Diego.
What is something most people don't know about you?
My wife says I tell people way too much about myself. But, basically, everything I like I buy at least two of, sometimes up to four. Once I bought two identical mountain bikes, each costing $5,000.
